Our motherhood started before us, and it will outlive us. It’s in the legacy of our traditions, it echoes in our imperfections, and it lingers in our love. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes it’s perfect. In-between, we can make it authentic. And maybe, when our children grow up and see us for who we are, they will still like us.

Do you remember a moment when you realized your parents were someone more? Like an actual human, who was possibly tired of being your maid and chef and nurse and all the things, and you were like…ok but can you cut my crust?

As Mamas, we control things. It’s what we do, and we’re good at it. How but how much control is too much?

“We’re back! And to be honest, I didn’t think I would ever return to the blog. But motherhood and postpartum are wild like that. Surviving, thriving, or maybe a little of both, you’re in this bubble where your head and heart can only hold so many things, so you end up saying goodbye to parts of yourself and the things you made time for before. But then one day, your mind clears, your heart settles, and you find yourself all over again. And that brings me here. Back to myself. Back to you.”

I’m back! After Poet was born, I fully leaned

I’m back!

After Poet was born, I fully leaned into my postpartum period and that newborn bliss. And that didn’t leave much space for writing, but I felt at peace with taking a break from the blog and embracing that fleeting season of life.

Now, almost a year and a half later, a new project I’ve been working on has called me back to the blog. And it’s going to look a bit different because truthfully, I’ve evolved in so many ways since my last post.

It’s been a minute, so here’s my welcome back:
I’m Erika James. I’m a retired, middle school Language Arts teacher who found an entirely new purpose in raising my three daughters. It’s the most meaningful thing I will ever do. But I can’t sit still, and I’ve been riding this wave of feeling the need to create, write, and pursue what is meant for me.

I am a writer. But I’m also, and most dearly, a Mama. And the road to get here has met many versions of myself. I write to slow down and be with all of who I am and who I’ve been. And I write to hold space for the spirit of my daughters.

I hope you stay awhile. 🥂
